​"The Alienist" by Caleb Carr is a crime thriller set in 1896 New York City, where an alienist (psychologist), Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, and a journalist, John Schuyler Moore, investigate a series of gruesome murders of young male prostitutes. They work with Sara Howard, a police department secretary, and under the direction of Theodore Roosevelt (then the police commissioner), using emerging psychological profiling techniques to solve the case.
